Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says US president is repeating mistakes of George Bush by 'interfering in Iran's affairs' Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has warned Barack Obama not to interfere in Iran's internal affairs after the US president condemned the brutal treatment of protesters. Responding to the US leader's recent remarks that he was "appalled and outraged" by post-election violence, Ahmadinejad said: "Mr Obama made a mistake to say those things ... our question is why he fell into this trap and said things that previously (George) Bush used to say." Ahmadinejad, who won the 12 June election by a landslide according to official results, told an audience in the port town of Assaluyeh: "Do you want to speak (with Iran) with this tone? If that is your stance then what is left to talk about? I hope you avoid interfering in Iran's affairs and express your regret in a way that the Iranian nation is informed of it." Obama has been trying to woo Iran and seeking to tread a careful line over Iran's post-election violence to maximise the chance of negotiation on Iran's nuclear programme. But this week he turned up the rhetoric after coming under pressure to speak more forcefully following vivid images of violent crackdowns on demonstrators by Iranian militias. The US has withdrawn invitations to Iranian diplomats to attend US independence day celebrations on 4 July. It was the first time since the countries broke off diplomatic relations in 1980 that Iranian diplomats had been invited to the embassy parties. Withdrawing the invitations is largely symbolic as no Iranians had replied. Senator John Kerry, the chairman of the influential Senate foreign relations committee, has told Reuters: "The president's policy of engagement is obviously delayed, but we are going to have to deal with the government of Iran." The Iranian government has continued to crack down on its opposition. According to a website affiliated with Mir Hossein Mousavi, the reformist candidate who insists the election was stolen from him, 70 university professors were detained immediately after meeting with Mousavi. The report on the Kalemeh site said it was not clear where the detainees were taken. The professors are believed to be from a group pushing for a more liberal form of government. Their detention would signal that authorities are picking off members of Iran's elite. In recent days, demonstrators have found themselves more and more scattered and struggling under a blanket crackdown that Mousavi's wife has compared to martial law. In clashes yesterday near Iran's parliament, thousands of police beat back hundreds of Mousavi supporters with tear gas and clubs. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has said the election of Ahmadinejad will not be reversed and that the government will never yield to demands from the streets. Mousavi, who is backed by the former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a pragmatist who favours a less confrontational foreign policy, wants the election annulled. But Iran's top legislative body, the guardian council, has ruled this out. A spokesman for the council, which must approve the poll, told the state-run Press TV that it had looked into all complaints but found no major fraud or irregularities. The spokesman said the vote was "among the healthiest elections ever held in the country" since the revolution. Mousavi supporters said they would release thousands of balloons tomorrow printed with the message "Neda you will always remain in our hearts" – a reference to Neda Soltan, who was shot dead last week and has become a symbol of the protest movement.
